18th June 2002 - Roy Underdown Pavilion

Sometimes experience can completely alter your perspective of things and, for some of us, such an event occurred on June 18th. We met at St Andrew's church, and Bert Allwood gave us a guided tour. It is an interesting building of course, but with Bert's knowledge and the odd anecdote, it is fascinating. He showed us marks on a door, made by fishermen who were going to sea, who then cancelled them out on their safe return. Some were not cancelled. He pointed out changes which had been made over the centuries, arches filled in, wings added. Stained-glass windows, pews supplied by the Taylors, who also made the coffins. The organ, the light fittings and where they came from. Then we climbed an iron spiral staircase and two ladders, crossed over the bells and up through a trapdoor to the roof of the tower. The building is impressive. The view is magnificent!
