At our meeting on 20th February, Ian Underdown talked about 'Satchell Lane'. Some of us hadn't even suspected that it was not part of Hamble until the early 1900s let alone that it's history as a community can be traced back to the 13th century. Ian took us from the first recorded mention of the name 'Shotteshal' in 1251 through many changes in ownership and occupation, and up to the present day. The talk was illustrated by some fascinating slides showing old maps, buildings, farming, TS Mercury and aviation scenes. Most of these are included in Ian's booklet on the subject which is available through the Society at £2 per copy.
