18th April 2006 - Roy Underdown Pavilion

The black and white picture on the screen looked vaguely like the road that I live in now, but there was not a car to be seen, the women were wearing long skirts, and there were only half of the houses that are there now. Then Dave Wilde explained that the photograph was taken in the 1930's. We had finished our seventh AGM in April, and Dave was helping us to 'Look back on Hamble.' We saw the airfield and the factory, with aircraft being repaired during the war. The control tower in the 60's, just beyond the end of Verdon Avenue, and the Secondary School in the 40's when Satchell Lane was re-routed to become the northern boundary. The new Primary School in '53, when there were only five shops in Coronation Parade, and the Harrier was called the Coronation Arms. Dave showed us a sports field, which has long since gone but the gate remains, and a bakery next door to the Old White Hart. A lot of changes in all those years, and deep nostalgia or amazement for those of us watching.
