20th June 2000 - Roy Underdown Pavilion

The subject was 'Earliest memories of Hamble" and members were invited to share their first recollections. We were told about schooldays, life in the Church Choir, children able to roam freely and make "dens" on the Common. We heard of leaving school at 14 and starting work in the bakery, now part of The Olde Whyte Harte, a week later. We heard about American soldiers doling out chewing gum or ice cream, Follands sports days, horticultural shows, regattas and a strong sense of community. Did you know that the radio show "Have a Go" was broadcast from the Memorial Hall in 1949?
