18th April 2000 - Roy Underdown Pavilion

Tony Sedgwick gave a talk on Hamble's airfields. Many of us would never have suspected that there were two airfields in the village, but Tony had photographic evidence and notes he had copied from the official Air Service Training diary. He said that now he wished he'd copied more! Tony told us about the south airfield, established in 1916 on the present BP site and the north airfield, which opened in 1926. We were taken through the War years and up to the last flight on 6 April 1986. Some members contributed memories of their own - being born and raised within daily sight and sound of aircraft, not surprised to look out of the kitchen window and see the nose of a Dakota peering over the garden fence. Aviation is certainly a popular subject within the society.
