14th September 1999 - Roy Underdown Pavilion

Kay Ainsworth, of Hampshire County Council Museums Service, gave an interesting and informative talk on the County's archaeological collection. Using colour slides, Kay introduced us to museums and archaeological sites in Hampshire, and the people who work in them. We saw some of their collections of artefacts and Kay explained their significance. The talk took us from Stone Age axes, via Roman and Anglo Saxon implements, to Victorian shoes buried under fireplaces for luck.

Of particular interest was the inscribed sheet of lead found in the River Hamble. Kay explained the inscription, which was by a Roman who was calling down a curse on the person who stole his money. We were also shown feet bones and models, comparing Anglo Saxon to Celtic characteristics. Some of us are now wondering about our origins.
