22nd June 1999 - Roy Underdown Pavilion
The inaugural meeting of the Society was attended by twenty four people
and there are now 32 members. A constitution for the Society
was agreed and a Committee formally elected.
Tony Sedgwick gave an interesting talk on employment in Hamble over the
years, and the effects on transport and housing. He compared
earlier times, when people commuted to Hamble to work in the larger
houses and in agriculture, to the arrival of industries such as
aviation when houses were built here for some employees. Lively
discussion then followed, with many of the audience confirming Tony's
points and linking them with relatives.
Ian Underdown then gave an account of how he became involved in local
history, an interesting and often amusing story. He recounted
how a disputed date for the start of the Hamble-Warsash Ferry led him
into research, and the obstacles which had to be overcome, such as
having an appropriate library card.
