During the early 1980s Hamble residents would see a smart well maintained steamship going pass Hamble Common, travelling from Southampton to south of the Isle of Wight and back most days. Few of them knew what she was carrying and most would be surprised!
This ship was the SS Shieldhall and she is now part of the National Historic Fleet. At the end of her working life a preservation society known as the Solent Steam Packet Ltd was set up and operates it as a charity.
SS Shieldhall was restored by volunteers to a sea-going condition and is now open to the public. She also undertakes excursions and attends historic events/festivals. SS Shieldhall is the largest working steamship in northern Europe.
A number of local residents work as volunteers supporting her, so why not come along and find out about their work and the history of the SS Shieldhall? Also what she was carrying when passing Hamble. If you would like more information please contact the Society’s Secretary.
